چکیده

This paper reports on the results of recent experiments performed on the JET tokamak on Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) with toroidal mode number (n) in the range |n|=3-15. The stability properties of these medium-n AEs are investigated experimentally using a set of compact in-vessel antennas, providing a direct and real-time measurement of the frequency, damping rate and amplitude for each individual toroidal mode number. First, we describe the development of a new algorithm for real-time mode detection and discrimination using the Sparse Signal Representation theory. Second, we present measurements of the dependence of the damping rate for Toroidal AEs with |n|8 upon various background plasma parameters. Finally, the results of theoretical modeling of the damping rate for n=3 Toroidal AEs, performed with the LEMan, CASTOR and TAEFL codes, are shown as function of the edge plasma elongation.

The Dependence of the Damping Rate of Medium-n Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes on the Edge Plasma Elongation in JET

This paper reports the first quantitative analysis of the measurements of the damping rate (γ/ω) for stable Alfvén Eigenmodes (AEs) with toroidal mode number (n) in the range |n|=3÷15 as function of the edge plasma elongation (κ95). We find that the damping rate γ/ω vs. κ95 for medium-n Toroidal AEs, with n=3 and n=7, increases for increasing elongation, i.e. its scaling vs. κ95 follows the sam...

Characterization of Stable and Unstable Alfvén Eigenmodes in Alcator C-Mod

Experiments designed to characterize both stable and unstable Alfvén eigenmodes are a key part of the Alcator C-Mod physics program. Stable intermediate toroidal mode number (3 ≤ n ≤ 14) Alfvén eigenmodes, which are expected to be the most unstable in ITER, are excited with a set of active MHD antennas and their damping rates are measured as a function of plasma parameters. This is part of an i...

Optimization of the active MHD spectroscopy system on JET for the excitation of individual intermediate and high-n Alfvén eigenmodes

The stability of Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) is studied experimentally in the JET tokamak by observing the plasma response to antenna-driven frequency-sweeping perturbations at the plasma edge. During the 2008/9 experimental campaigns, the complete set of the new antennas was operated and AEs with toroidal mode numbers (n) in the intermediate-n range were excited under various plasma conditions. In...

A Comparison of Measured and Calculated Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode Damping Rates in Alcator C-Mod

Measured damping rates of stable Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes (TAEs) have been compared with damping rates calculated with the NOVA-K code for a number of experimental conditions on Alcator C-Mod in an attempt to validate the NOVA-K damping model. Very low amplitude ( / B B θ θ ~ 10 -7 at the wall) stable TAEs are excited in Ohmic plasmas with a pair of active MHD antennas inside C-Mod. By sweepi...

Linear properties of reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes in the DIII-D tokamak

Linear properties of the reverse shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) in a well-diagnosed DIII-D tokamak experiment (discharge #142111) are studied in gyrokinetic particle simulations. Simulations find that a weakly damped RSAE exists due to toroidal coupling and other geometric effects. The mode is driven unstable by density gradients of fast ions from neutral beam injection. Various damping and driv...
